“In any given moment, a person’s growth is optimized if they lean just beyond their edge, their capacity, their fear. They should not be too lazy, happily stagnating in the zone of security and comfort. Nor should they push far beyond their edge, stressing themselves unnecessarily, unable to metabolize their experience. they should lean just slightly beyond the edge of fear and discomfort. Constantly. In everything they do.”

~David Deida

Now that’s a quote you come back with!!!! And I’m back! Wow, what a beast this summer has been.  It’s the kind of summer that rips your soul out and puts it back upside down and says “go get em’ kiddo.”  Hahaha, no, it’s been an amazing summer but it’s one that’s pushed me beyond the edge of my comfort zone.  The edge of the comfort zone is a phrase we always hear.  It often conjures up doing something that you normally wouldn’t do.  It also is associated with growth.  And the truth is these are only partially correct.  My definition of pushing beyond the comfort zone is this:  HOLY MOTHER OF GOD I AM GOING TO DIE!!!  Of course I tend to err on the side of being a wee bit dramatic.

I’ve pushed beyond my comfort zone multiple times in my life.  I know this feeling and it is absolutely terrifying/amazing.  That’s why it’s only been a couple of times and not ALL the time like it should be.  This blog was one of recent. I am now very aware when I start to toe the edge. I pace the room and get anxious and I become a big ol’ whiny wanker (just ask Bridget).  Which means I have to push further.  That said, when you push beyond your comfort zone it’s normally because you are doing something that your soul has been waiting for you to explore for ages.  It’s screaming for you to stretch and cross that threshold.  The only issue now is that it’s covered with raging insecurities and fear.  This means your mind will do everything in it’s power to stop you from doing it.  I recently did stand up at an open mic. Holy crap! You think I was asked to climb Mt. Everest wearing only a necktie. Well, that’s what it felt like.  You see the last time I did stand up was in Philly five years ago.  It ended in a disaster of epic proportions.  I mean we are talking so bad that people were simultaneously vomiting and weeping in their seats because they wanted it to stop.  Moral of the story, I was nervous to the core.  But I did it.  I survived! I LIVED!  And damn if my soul didn’t love it! Screw you excuses! I will battle you to the death…well, after this TV show. NO! NOW!

The Key:  When you feel yourself coming up with every excuse in the book to not do something, know that’s exactly why you should do it.  Truly getting out of your comfort zone isn’t trying a new food like pickles.  I’m talking about carving out a giant pickle and going over Niagara Falls in it.  You feel the fear in your gut and plunge!  That’s getting out of your comfort zone.

Watch Out For:  EXCUSES.  NO EXCUSES ALLOWED. Big fat excuses that may arise:  ”I’m fighting with blah blah and I can’t do it now, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the energy, I’m sick all of a sudden, let’s get drunk, I have to clean first then maybe…, let me scroll on social media endlessly (except for this blog), I’m sweepy, oh poo I’m late now I can’t go, it’s not even that big of a deal, I died. NO. NO. NO. NO. There are no excuses except for death and even with that I want to see the body.

Go Get Em’ Tiger:   We have one shot at this life.  I’m a glutton for punishment.  I like pain.  Sometimes unnecessarily so and that’s why I like this work.  Once you’ve crossed that edge, whew, don’t stop, keep going, that’s where the magic is and by God it is terrifying.  And the minute an excuse pops up, ANY EXCUSE, even the fear of unbridled failure, you push on and the entire UNIVERSE will cheer for you because you just kicked cosmic ass!!! BOOM!!!!
